Patch cords, also known as jumper cables, are short network cables with RJ45 connectors on both ends. They are used to connect various network devices, such as computers, routers, switches, and wireless access points.

Applications:

  • Connecting network devices in server cabinets and switch assemblies
  • Connecting computers to network outlets in offices and homes
  • Creating temporary network connections
  • Extending existing networks

Types:

  • Shielded (STP): protect the signal from electromagnetic interference (EMI)
  • Unshielded (UTP): cheaper and easier to install, but more susceptible to interference
  • Category 5e: standard category for most network applications
  • Category 6: faster data transmission, ideal for Gigabit Ethernet networks
  • Category 7: the fastest category, designed for 10 Gigabit networks
