Access control

Access control is a set of mechanisms and procedures that regulate who can access specific locations, systems, or information. It is a critical component of both physical and IT security, designed to protect people, assets, and confidential data from unauthorized access.

Components of an access control system:

  • Identification elements: Used to identify users, such as magnetic cards, key fobs, fingerprints, and passwords.
  • Readers: Read information from identification elements and transmit it to the controller.
  • Controllers: Decide whether to grant the user access and send signals to actuators.
  • Actuators: Control physical access, e.g., by locking or unlocking doors.
